Portugal’s best and Manchester United’s darling midfielder, Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro was brought into this world on February 5, 1985 in Funchal, Madeira, Portugal. His mother Maria Dolores dos Santos Aveiro and father Jose Dinis Aveiro had four children. His parents decided to name this future famous footballer after someone that you wouldn’t think a Portuguese family would normally consider. He was named after the 40th President of the United States, Ronald Reagan.A passionate desire to play on the field and an undying love for football, Cristiano’s interest in the great sport of football started when he was just three years old. When Cristiano was around ten or so, word of his spectacular skills on the field was getting around his native country of Portugal. The young midfielder was soon getting a lot of much deserved interest from some of the most popular clubs in Portugal; Cristiano’s football future was looking very bright.


After stints with three different youth clubs, Andorinha, CD Nacional, and Sporting CP’s youth club, Ronaldo finally made his debut with his first senior club, Sporting CP or Sporting Clube de Portugal. An influential impression was made against his current club Manchester United in 2003 in front of world famous football manager Sir Alex Ferguson of Manchester United. This match resulted in an embarrassing loss for one of the English Premiership League’s best, Sporting handed Manchester United a beating with a final score of 3-1. Not only did Ferguson take notice of Cristiano’s amazing performance but the Manchester United players were absolutely blown away by the midfielder’s play. The real conflict wasn’t Rooney getting booted; it was the reason for the ejection that started the controversy that might have possibly turned the Manchester United squad upside down.Arguably, most would agree that the whole situation was not the fault of Cristiano Ronaldo, but Rooney got in a dust up with a few of the Portugal players and Ronaldo got in the middle of the scuffle, bad idea. Unfortunately for Rooney, he accidentally stepped on the groin area of one of the Portuguese players. Ronaldo came up to the referee when Rooney was pleading his case and the English striker took it the wrong way and pushed his Manchester United teammate which eventually resulted in Rooney being sent off with a red card.Once the dust settled and Portugal subsequently eliminated England from the World Cup, there was a lot of tension in the clubhouse of Manchester United and all signs pointed towards disaster. Cristiano Ronaldo was convinced that he needed to leave the famous football club since he felt it just couldn’t be the same between Rooney and himself after the World Cup, it was said he had his eyes on Spain’s popular club, Real Madrid.Wayne Rooney saw things a little differently though, he wanted Cristiano to stay and why not, Cristiano is a premier player. Rooney and Sir Alex Ferguson approached the midfielder before he made any rash decisions and eventually convinced him not to leave the club. After all was said and done, Rooney said the reason he got so mad because he didn’t want his United teammate to get involved and when Ronaldo did, he just snapped and disappointed.

As a result of what happened between Cristiano and Rooney, English fans lashed out against Ronaldo and he subsequently lost a lot of his fan base in England. Cristiano was booed and heavily criticized, being blamed for the exit of the English national team. Even with all of this controversy, problems and hatred from English fans that surrounded Cristiano following the aftermath of the World Cup, he responded with an impressive year with Manchester United and an eventual won the hearts of a large number of English fans who were ready to forgive the young man.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s legacy as a footballer has basically just started and there will be many more World Cups and Manchester United matches, but one thing is undeniable, Ronaldo is one of the best in the world and he will be a midfielder to keep your eye on especially playing next to such great football players like Rio Ferdinand, Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Gary Neville and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Do you believe that being Cristiano Ronaldo’s sister is a half way to success?

There is no doubt that he is going to have a lot of emphasis in my career, in fact I believe that he is going to be a key figure in it as I know that people are going to be curious to listen to Cristiano's sister and know what she sounds like. It is also very encouraging and gratifying to know that he supports me as a public figure and as a sister, and it is even more comforting to know that he is with me every step of the way.


How is it like to live under the name of "Cristiano Ronaldo"?

When I hear people say: "Look!, there’s Cristiano Ronaldo’s sister!" I feel honoured and proud to be who I am. I'm very proud of my brother and when I see that people like him I feel very proud of them too. It's important they look at me as an individual and give me the right appreciation, but I don't worry about people looking/referring to me as Cristiano's sister.


Is it true that you are like a second mother to Ronaldo?

My mother is an essential part of his life as he turns to her for help in decisions he makes and with problems that he may have, in fact our mother is the essential part in all of our lives as she is always there for all of us no matter what. There is no doubt that our mother is the master of her children, which is why she worries a lot about Cristiano, and the life he has decided to live, that is why when there are rumours going around about him we get very protective and upset about, as we don’t want to see him being hurt or his dream torn apart. We are a very close family and the more problems we face together, the stronger and closer we will continue to get!


Many people talk about the difficult childhood you had, but just how difficult was it?

Difficult isn‘t the right word to say as we just weren’t born into a rich family, but never the less we were never hungry or without shoes on our feet and a roof above our heads. We had the essential things we needed to survive, we had food, a small home and loving parents and family. So was it a difficult childhood? No, it was just a very simple and humble one, which has taught us to appreciate everything we now have.


But were you happy?

Yes, very happy! We grew up together. When Cristiano joined Sporting Lisbon we were - and we still are- a very close and united family. That is why no matter where Cristiano goes one of us will always live with him, until he gets married and starts his own family, even now that he lives in England my mother and sister live with him so that they can support him and take care of him, as he is the baby of our family.


Would you like him to play again in Portugal?

That's his decision and his alone, as long as he is happy it does not matter whether he is here in Portugal or somewhere very far. He's still 19 years of age, he's starting his career, he still has a lot to learn and achieve and mistakes to make. For now we can't think about that but, of course, I care immensely about Sporting as it was the first major club he played at and if it wasn‘t for that club he would not be playing for Manchester United now!


What happened between Miss Portugal and Ronaldo?

They are just friends; they do a lot of charity work together. If he were to go out with all of my friends, there would be a huge list, with no ending.


At this moment, is he alone?

Of course not! He is living with his mother and sister (laughs). No, he doesn't have girlfriend.


Does he still come to Portugal many times?

Yes, whenever he can come and visit us. This year, for example, has been a very complicated and action packed year, with the Euro 2004, the Olympics and the football season with Manchester United. In fact it is unlikely that he will spend Christmas with us this year. But my mother and sister are there and we have two cousins that are planning to go to Manchester to spend Christmas with them and visit the City, which they have heard so much about.


How did you get that love for music?

It started when I was a child, when there were concerts in Madeira, I used to be invited because I was a very active person. I always had a dream of recording a CD, but I never thought it would be possible. Until I met Ana Malhoa, in Lisbon, she knew that I knew and liked to sing and so she introduced me to a producer, who is now working with me. So when this opportunity came up I grabbed it with both hands.


What kind of music will your album have?

A mixture, really. Lots of romantic songs, that I really like, and some pop but mostly romantic ballads.


Are the songs written by you?

I have been writing some songs, but they aren't finished yet. The only one that is completely done is dedicated to my son, Rodrigo. It's not romantic. Well, obviously it’s from mother to son. It's a love song but maternal (laughs).


Do you want to sing live?

Yes, always. When I have the opportunity I want to do it. I want to prove that I'm not only Cristiano Ronaldo's sister. I want to prove that I can sing.

Cristiano Ronaldo started playing competitive football at 8-year-old for amateur club Andorinha, and then for local team CD Nacional when he was 10. He then move to one of Portugal’s largest football clubs, Sporting Lisbon in 1996.

Ronaldo trained in the youth team before playing his first senior game for Sporting in 1999 against Moreirense, and scored a double on his debut.

Ronaldo played for Portugal’s youth side in the UEFA U-17 Championships and drew attention internationally. Liverpool under manager Gérard Houllier back then was reported to have interest in signing Ronaldo, but it was Manchester United that made the move in 2003 to fill the void of departed David Beckham.

Ronaldo’s signature came after Sporting Lisbon beat Manchester United 3–1 in a friendly; on the way back to England the United players spoke enthusiastically about the young winger and suggested manager Sir Alex Ferguson to secure his signature, which they did.

Ronaldo made his memorable debut for Manchester United as a substitute against Bolton. His 30 minutes performances created hype with United fans and the English media with his dazzling dribbles.

Ronaldo’s first two seasons at United received mixed reviews; despite praised for his skills, Ronaldo was often being criticized for lack of consistency and poor decision making on the field. However his consistency level has been greatly since the 2006/2007 season, which saw him becoming one of the best player in EPL.

Cristiano Ronaldo made his senior debut for Portugal shortly after being signed by United in a match against Kazakhstan in August 2003. He has become one of the key players for Portugal since then.

The controversial moment of Ronaldo’s career was in World Cup 2006, where he was alleged to influence referee to send off his Manchester United team mate and England striker Wayne Rooney in their quarter finals clash.

Ronaldo was being used as the scapegoat for England’s defeat in the World Cup and the hatred towards him had prompted his intention to leave England and Manchester United. In the end United managed to keep him, and Ronaldo had a wonderful season in the Premiership against all odds.

Ronaldo won both the PFA Player and Young Player of the Year Award in 2007. He is the first player since 1977 to bag the double in the same season. Ronaldo was also voted Footballer of the Year by the Football Writers’ Association for the same year.

Ronaldo’s performance was crucial to help Manchester United securing their first Premiership title in 4 years in the 2006/2007 season.

Ronaldo was the top 3 finalists for both the FIFA World Player of the Year and European Player of the Year awards in 2007. The eventual winner however went to AC Milan’s Brazilian playmaker, Kaka instead.

Ronaldo continued his fine form in the 2007/2008 season, netted in 40 goals in all competition (31 in Premier League), and was again voted as the PFA Player of The Year and Football Writers’ Footballer of the Year.
